New Year’s Value

“Money has never made man happy, nor will it, there is nothing in its nature to produce happiness,” said Benjamin Franklin. “The more of it one has the more one wants.”

He also famously cited, “Wine is constant proof that God loves us and loves to see us happy.”

Such is the tension of the early months of a year. For many, January and February can be a low key time due to the post-holiday fiscal blues. Yet life goes on, and life deserves to be lived. Libations can help in that regard.

Which brings us to the doors of the PLCB. Just recently, Mike listed several good buys currently offered in the Commonwealth; here are a few more value plays – all $13 or less. Founding father Ben just might have approved.

Arnaldo Caprai Montefalco Rosso 2009 ($12.99)
Arguably the finest example of a Montefalco Rosso (Sangiovese with Sagrantino and Merlot) that’s widely available, this wine is consistently good year in and year out. Which is why it’s such a stunning deal at $12.99, especially considering the ’07 is still available in PA (in limited quantities) at $22.99. Despite the everyday name, it’s a beast that requires a good decant or several years on its side to bring out its best. Pair with pork roasts or other hearty meats. Stock up while you can. (Review by Mike.)

Cultivate “Copa Cabana” Cabernet Sauvignon-Carmenére 2011 ($10.09)
Ready-to-drink Chilean blend with the unmistakable mark of Carmenére – a new world jumbo of stewed red fruit, bell pepper and subtly smoky, spicy elements. Pretty darn smooth. Available as a special order (minimum shipping quantity of one) from the PLCB. Product Code 528840.

Doural Red Douro 2011 ($8.99)
An easy-going red table blend from Portugal. Medium bodied, spicy and fruity with a touch of oaky creaminess, it’s not one to over-think. Rather, a slightly exotic, everyday wine that will easily accompany pizza, cheese or just about anything you put in front of it.

quinta-de-azevedo-vinho-verde-2012Fox Run Vineyards Traminette Hedonia NV ($12.99)
A viscous, mostly-sweet creation courtesy of the Finger Lakes and the hybrid Traminette grape. The 20% alcohol level is an attention grabber, as is the forever lasting finish and lively flavors – a mash-up of herbs, grapefruit, lychee and other fruits. Fine as an aperitif, with dessert, or as a cocktail mixer. 375 mL bottle.

McManis Pinot Noir 2011 ($6.99)
Not quite Sea Smoke, but what can we expect for seven bucks a bottle? McManis is a consistent producer that gets it done in the value vein. Give this PN plenty of air and some food to coax out a little more balance, but all in all a pleasingly fruity and bright pour that will fare well for guests or weeknight dinner plans.

Quinta de Azevedo Vinho Verde 2011 ($10.69)
Zesty and alive, with a giving, Riesling-like nose full of lime. In fact, Riesling lovers will find a mate in this Portuguese white with a low level effervescence. Nicely structured, mineral, walks on the dry side. Ideal for foods ranging from stir fried shrimp and veggie plates to Indian food. The 2010 vintage is available as a special order (minimum shipping quantity of one). Product Code: 522379.

Sheldrake Point Luckystone Red 2011 ($12.99)
A light bodied blend that’s a true ruby red in hue. Fragrant and dynamic on the palate, featuring bright fruits reminiscent of raspberry, cherry and pomegranate, a pinch of dirt, tea and mulling spice, this East Coaster will reward those willing to explore. A natural match for a range of foods.
